' David Copperfield David Copperfield (Daniel Radcliffe) is born after the death of his father and is brought up by his mother (Emilia Fox) and the housekeeper Peggotty (Pauline Quirke).
After a couple of years Mrs. Copperfield meets Mr. Murdstone (Trevor Eve) and eventually they marry. Murdstone turns out to be a very cruel man who makes David’s life a living hell. One time, when David is punished for not knowing his schoolwork, he bites his stepfather in the hand. This results in David being sent away to a school in London, led by Creakle (Ian McKellen). Here David meets Steerforth (Harry Lloyd), who protects him from bullies and becomes his friend.
When David’s mother dies, Murdstone is no longer willing to pay for his education and forces David to work for his money. He lives with the Micawbers (Bob Hoskins & Imelda Staunton), who are poor and always in debt. But they are a happy and optimistic couple.
Micawber lands in prison for not paying his debts and after his release, he and his family move to Porthmouth. David is advised to leave London too and go look for his only relative, Aunt Betsey Trotwood (Maggie Smith), who lives in Dover. Robbed of his money and other belongings, David undertakes an agonising journey by foot.
Finally he arrives at his Ant’s house and she takes him in. Together with her friend Mr. Dick (Ian McNeice), she takes care of David and sends him back to (another) school in another city, where he is to live with his Aunt Betsey’s solicitor, Mr. Wickfield (Oliver Ford Davis) and his lovely young daughter Agnes (Antonia Corrigan).
Thus the story of young David Copperfield. The remaining 100 minutes of this superior 3 hour TV movie are about the further ‘adventures’ of the adult David. (Ciarán McMenamin).
